The Lizard, the Fish and the Sparrow
A lizard once made a valiant effort to reach the edge of a lake. Along the way, he encountered a fish that had surfaced for air.
The lizard said to the fish, “I wish to befriend you.” The fish responded with skepticism, “Why, lizard, do you seek my friendship?” The lizard confessed, “I am tired of being pursued and pecked at by the sparrow. I hope that by befriending you, I can count on your assistance should the sparrow attack me again.” Understanding the lizard’s predicament, the fish said, “How unfortunate! I agree to be your friend as friends are meant to aid each other.” However, as soon as the fish finished speaking, the sparrow swooped down to peck at the lizard.
The lizard cried out for help from his new
friend, but all the fish could do was poke its head out of the water and dive
back in, saying, “I truly wish to assist you and be your friend. However, I am
unable to help you as I cannot survive on land.”
